SPEECH

Speech is the verbal expression of sounds using the mouth, lungs, vocal cords, lips and mouth. It includes how the sounds are made, the soft or loud pitch as well as the rhythm used.

LANGUAGE

Language is the understanding of what is being said or written (receptive language) along with the combination of words you use to express your thoughts, wants and needs (expressive language).

COMMUNICATION

Communication is the combination of speech and language but also includes written, symbols, and gestures. It is the means to sharing our thoughts, needs, and ideas.

Signs that your child may be experiencing difficulties:

  • Mispronouncing words or sounds
  • Difficulty understanding:
    • Basic wh- questions (e.g., who, where and what questions)
    • Concepts of 'same' and 'different'
    • Basic colours
    • Two-part instructions (e.g., give me your bag and put your shoes on)
  • Difficulty expressing wants and needs
  • Using less than 4-5 words in a sentence
  • Stuttering
  • Difficulties socialising using words, tending to become physical or using emotional outbursts instead
  • Poor use of social skills such as eye-contact, reading body language, facial expressions
